Saint Athanasius the Great
Saint Athanasius the Great was one of the most important Fathers of the Orthodox Church and a true defender of the Christian faith. He was born in Alexandria around 295 AD and from a young age dedicated his life entirely to God. Known for his deep learning, wisdom, and steadfast love for truth, he became a guiding light of Orthodoxy.
As a deacon, he participated in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, where he boldly opposed the heresy of Arius, who denied the divinity of Christ. With the grace of the Holy Spirit and unshakable courage, Saint Athanasius proclaimed that Jesus Christ is “of one essence with the Father,” true God from true God.
Later, he became Patriarch of Alexandria and shepherded his flock with love and humility. Despite enduring many persecutions, exiles, and false accusations, he never wavered in his faith. His life and teaching remain a model of courage, devotion, and fidelity to the truth of Christ.
The Church commemorates Saint Athanasius the Great on January 18th, together with Saint Cyril of Alexandria. His life continues to inspire all who seek to live in truth and defend the Orthodox faith with love and humility.
Apolytikion of Saint Athanasius the Great
You strengthened the Church with the armor of faith,
and crowned her with the helmet of Orthodoxy, O Father Athanasius.
You championed the truth of Christ,
and taught all to glorify the Holy Trinity.
Intercede with Christ our God to save our souls.
